Strong 6.8 quake hits near East Timor

DILI, East Timor — A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck deep beneath the seabed near East Timor on Tuesday but no tsunami warning was issued, a local geophysics agency said.

The quake hit at 13:57 pm (0657 GMT) at a depth of 469 kilometres (291 miles), about 271 kilometres northeast of the capital, Dili, according to Indonesia’s geophysics agency.

“We did not issue a tsunami warning. There are no reports of damage so far,” said Novita, an official at Indonesia’s national quake centre.

Liberty Dollars held by collectors may be subject to seizure as contraband by federal law enforcement, officials with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Secret Service said Aug. 24.

Statements by officials for those two federal law enforcement agencies seem to reverse the position taken in comments released from the United States Attorney’s Office in Charlotte, N.C., and published in Coin World in April, that mere possession of Liberty Dollars did not constitute a violation of any federal statute.
That position has apparently changed, although officials of the U.S. Secret Service — which would be the federal agency likely charged with executing any possible seizures — would not provide any definitive comments concerning under what circumstances Liberty Dollars would be seized.

Futuristic ‘airships’ planned for North

A British manufacturer hopes to build a fleet of airships for Yellowknife’s Discovery Air to supply remote communities and enterprises in the North, the two companies say.

The futuristic giant blimps from Hybrid Air Vehicles would cost $40 million each, Discovery Air Innovations, a Quebec-based subsidiary of Discovery Air, announced after signing a tentative deal with HAV.

The aircraft use a mix of non-flammable helium and air power to fly and can land on almost any surface, HAV says on its website.

Tropical Storm Strikes Taiwan, Heads for Chinese Coast

Tropical storm Nanmadol dumped as much as a half-meter of rain on Taiwan Monday, forcing mass evacuations and flooding homes, roads and farmland before heading toward southeastern China.

The storm was downgraded from typhoon status early Monday. It struck with torrents of rain and winds over 100 kilometers an hour as it began moving through the southern portion of the island before entering the Taiwan Strait.  There were early reports of one fatality.

Virginia quake may have exceeded nuclear plant design

The historic earthquake that shut Dominion Resources Inc’s North Anna nuclear plant in Virginia last week may have shaken the facility more than it was designed to withstand, the U.S. nuclear regulator said on Monday.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it had sent a special inspection team to the plant rocked by the 5.8-magnitude quake, after initial reviews from Dominion indicated the ground motion may have exceeded North Anna’s design parameters.
