Mexican quake causes small tsunami in spring pool near Vegas
LAS VEGAS >> About 10 minutes after a powerful, magnitude-7.4 earthquake rattled southern Mexico last month, researchers outside Las Vegas were watching a tiny tsunami churn a normally tranquil spring pool 1,700 miles away.
Three National Park Service technicians were doing maintenance on data recorders at Devil’s Hole March 20 when the waters started surging more than 2 feet high. They grabbed a camera, and their video of the rare phenomenon now has more than 47,000 views on YouTube.

Strong quake shakes Chile, no damage reported
(Reuters) – A powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Chile’s eastern port of Valparaiso early on Tuesday, shaking buildings as far away as the capital Santiago, but there were no reports of significant damage and the country’s main copper mines were unaffected.
One elderly man died as a result of a heart attack brought on by the quake, which struck 26 miles north-northeast of Valparaiso, and 69 miles northwest of the capital Santiago, but there were no other reports of injuries.
State emergency office ONEMI said a stretch of coastline was being evacuated as a precaution, but there was no tsunami alert.

Does it seem to you like there has been an unusual amount of seismic activity around the world lately? Well, it isn’t just your imagination. The Ring of Fire is roaring to life and that is really bad news for the west coast of the United States. Approximately 90 percent of all earthquakes and approximately 75 percent of all volcanic eruptions occur along the Ring of Fire. Considering the fact that the entire west coast of the United States lies along the Ring of Fire, we should be very concerned that the Ring of Fire is becoming more active. On Wednesday, the most powerful strike-slip earthquake ever recorded happened along the Ring of Fire. If that earthquake had happened in a major U.S. city along the west coast, the city would have been entirely destroyed. Scientists tell us that there is nearly a 100% certainty that the “Big One” will hit California at some point. In recent years we have seen Japan, Chile, Indonesia and New Zealand all get hit by historic earthquakes. It is inevitable that there will be earthquakes of historic importance on the west coast of the United States as well. So far we have been very fortunate, but that good fortune will not last indefinitely.

Massive 8.6 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia’s Aceh province
A tsunami warning has been issued in the Indian Ocean after powerful earthquakes off the coast of Indonesia’s Aceh province, prompting evacuations from coastal regions and alarm in areas struck by a devastating wave in 2004.
Wednesday’s first quake was measured at a preliminary 8.6-magnitude, according to the US Geological Survey, which revised down an earlier 8.9 estimate.
A small tsunami measuring 10cm reached Thailand’s Andaman Coast, an official said.
“A 10-centimetre tsunami wave generated by the first earthquake hit Koh Miang off Phang Nga,” the director of Thailand’s National Disaster Warning Centre, Somsak Khaosuwan, said on Thai television.
A tsunami measuring 17cm had been generated and was headed for the Aceh province, Victor Sardina, a geophysicist at the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said.
He said the total vertical measurement of the wave, according to monitoring gauges, was 35cm, making the height 17cm. He did not provide a time estimate for landfall.

Threatening, active faults found off Boso
Dual jolt could trigger Tokyo temblor up to magnitude 9

Two previously unknown active faults were found off the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, with one researcher warning that a jolt in the two faults at the same time could trigger an earthquake of magnitude 8 to 9.
The two faults, one at least 160 km long and the other more than 300 km, were found on the floor of the Pacific Ocean around 100 to 200 km southeast of the southern tip of the peninsula, according to a group of researchers from Hiroshima University, Nagoya University, the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and other parties.
“The faults have been unmarked and uninvestigated. There is a possibility of strong jolts and tsunami reaching the southern Kanto region (including Tokyo) and the Tokai region (central Honshu). It should be promptly investigated in detail,” said research group member Mitsuhisa Watanabe, a professor at Toyo University.
The group will report its findings at a Thursday meeting of the Association of Japanese Geographers in Tokyo.
The group used a bathymetric chart made by the Japan Coast Guard to analyze the geography of the seafloor in detail. It then estimated the location of the active faults by taking into consideration cliffs formed by earthquakes and other elevated features.

Better prepared: Mexico’s 7.4 quake causes damage, but no deaths
By the time the powerful 7.4 earthquake rumbled in Mexico City Tuesday, the 56 students ages 6 months to 6 years attending the Montessori Kid’s Place in Mexico City were already evacuated, gathered in the front lobby of the school, a location city engineers had earlier indicated as the safest spot.

She had purchased two alarms last year, each the size of a book, which warns them of seismic activity in Guerrero state. Japan earthquake: Northern Japan rattled by 6.8 earthquake
A series of earthquakes rattled Tokyo and northeast Japan late Wednesday evening but caused no apparent damage or injury in the same region hit by last year’s devastating tsunami.
The strongest tremor, off Hokkaido island, was 6.8 magnitude and caused tidal changes that prompted some communities to issue evacuation orders or tsunami advisories to residents nearest the coast.
A swelling of 20 centimeters (8 inches) was observed in the port of Hachinohe in Aomori, northern Japan, about one hour after the tremor. Smaller changes were reported in several locations on Hokkaido island and Aomori prefecture.
The Japan Meteorological Agency lifted all tsunami advisories about an hour and half later.

France hit by third earthquake in two days
For the third time in 48 hours, the south of France was hit by an earthquake.
The latest measured 4.0 on the Richter scale and hit the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence area late on Monday afternoon.
Like the earthquake which hit late on Sunday evening measuring 4.9, the epicentre was just north east of the small town of Barcelonnette.
The latest earthquake was weaker and “felt slightly by locals” according to the French centre for seismology.
A third earthquake hit the western Charente-Maritime region on Sunday morning with a magnitude of 3.8.

Strong 6.8 quake shakes Siberia, no casualties
A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 shook several republics in Russia’s southwestern Siberia on Sunday but caused no casualties or serious damage, the emergencies ministry said.
The tremor, which occurred at 1:20pm local time (0620 GMT) in the republic of Tyva, had its epicentre
about 107 kilometres (66 miles) from the town of Kyzyl, which saw tremors of a similar magnitude on December 27.
The remote and scarcely populated republic on the Mongolian border is one of Russia’s most seismically active regions along with its Pacific Ocean coast.
The regional emergencies ministry said the quake was felt throughout Tyva and neighbouring regions but caused no casualties or any serious structural damage, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.
But several locals reported their apartment windows breaking and books and other items falling off shelves, with a series of tremors lasting four or five minutes.
