Did you ever see Minority Report? It’s one of Steven Spielberg’s often forgotten about movies based on the short story by Philip K. Dick. In the movie, pre-couch Tom Cruise plays a police officer in the year 2054 who works for the highly specialized ‘pre-crime’ division.

Ivory Coast: Laurent Gbagbo stays in bunker and vows not to surrender

Ivory Coast’s embattled leader Laurent Gbagbo is protected by a rump of just 200 soldiers in his bunker beneath the presidential palace, the French defence minister said, but he is refusing to surrender to advancing forces.

Scientists have grown sperm in the laboratory in a landmark study that could help preserve the fertility of cancer patients and shed fresh light on male reproductive problems.

Fertility experts called the work a “crucial experimental advance” towards the use of lab-grown sperm in the clinic and a stepping stone to the routine creation of human sperm for men who cannot make the cells normally.

Pimco Buying Emerging Market ‘Rising Stars’ as Inflation Looms

March 21 (Bloomberg) — Pacific Investment Management Co. says investors should buy company debt in Russia, Brazil and other emerging markets where rising wages and relatively low public and private debt will help borrowers weather accelerating inflation.

The manager of the world’s biggest bond fund is buying debt of “rising stars” linked to nations with expanding wealth because they will more easily be able to pass on higher materials costs, Mark Kiesel, Pimco’s global head of corporate bond portfolio management, wrote in a report today on the firm’s website. At the same time, he’s avoiding companies dependent on growth in Europe, the U.S. and Japan that will struggle amid stagnant wages and debt-laden governments and consumers.

“Companies which are tied most directly into the strong economic growth engine in the emerging markets should have the most pricing power and ability to either pass through rising costs or absorb them without a significant margin hit,” Kiesel wrote. Those more Read more…

Seized Sensitive Cargo Was Bound For Iran, Malaysia Says

Malaysia on Friday revealed that two seized cargo containers filled with technology that could have been employed to build nuclear weapons were bound for Iran, the Associated Press reported (see GSN, March 17).

Under a 2010 law that prohibits the illicit import or export of WMD-related materials, local police moved two weeks ago to confiscate the two containers from a Malaysian-registered ship docked at Port Klang. National police chief Ismail Omar said the vessel was sailing from China to Tehran (see GSN, March 17).

Western governments fear that Iran’s nuclear development program is secretly geared toward producing nuclear weapons. Iran maintains its atomic efforts are entirely peaceful.

F.D.I.C. Approves ‘Too Big to Fail’ Plan

A top banking regulator approved a plan to seize and unwind big banks — a proposal that will help address those “too big to fail” firms whose collapse could imperil the financial system.

The board of Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve a set of proposed rules intended to create an orderly process to unwind large financial institutions. The rules outline how creditors can file a claim and how those claims will be addressed, hopefully bringing some clarity to a previously murky situation.

The vote moves the proposal into a 60-day public comment period, after which the agency will have to settle on final rules. The rule would apply to big banks, financial firms and large nonfinancial companies that pose a systemic risk to the broader economy.

Nasdaq is moving closer to a hostile bid for NYSE Euronext, which could come as early as Tuesday, sources close to the matter told CNBC.

Nasdaq [NDAQ  26.37  -0.82  (-3.02%)   ] has nearly secured financing for the hostile bid [NYX  36.55  1.28  (+3.63%)   ], in an arrangement that could involve IntercontinentalExchange, also known as ICE [ICE  124.79  -1.28  (-1.02%)   ], which operates  a global futures exchange and over-the-counter (OTC) markets and derivatives clearing houses.

Questions remain on how financing would be structured, as well as what role ICE would play in the bid, as sources say that ICE will not use its stock in any deal. Instead, it appears ICE could commit to purchasing certain NYSE assets upon the closing of any deal.

Any Nasdaq bid would face significant obstacles, including the likelihood of strong antitrust scrutiny, as nearly every U.S.-listed stock sits on either the NYSE or Nasdaq exchanges.
