STOCKHOLM—The Norwegian Coastal Administration said Friday the large leakage of oil from the Icelandic container vessel Godafoss had been stopped.

At a press conference Friday afternoon, Kystverket said it had not yet been able to evaluate the full extent of the spill, although it is known to have reached the coast of Fredrikstad, southern Norway.

Coast guards from Norway and Sweden have been co-operating to manage the spill the after the vessel ran aground late Thursday.

Ragnhild Bussqvist, duty officer at Kustbevakningen, the Swedish coast guard, told Dow Jones Newswires one of its aircraft had detected a 2.5-kilometer oil stain in the area.

Silver Reaches New 30-Year High!

February 19, 2011 Comments off

Silver reached a new 30-year high today of $32.87 per ounce up 89% since NIA declared silver the best investment for the next decade on December 11th of 2009 at $17.40 per ounce!

The gold/silver ratio is now down to below 43. NIA predicted a sharp decline in the gold/silver ratio both in its top 10 predictions for 2010 at 64 and in its top 10 predictions for 2011 at 46. We believe the gold/silver ratio will decline to at least 16 within the next few years, but it could decline to as low as 10. It wouldn’t surprise us to see gold reach $5,000 per ounce in 2015 and silver reach $500 per ounce at the same time!

China Prevents Release of U.N. Report on North Korea

February 19, 2011 1 comment

China has advised other nations on the U.N. Security Council that it intends to prevent the release of a U.N. document that charges North Korea with flouting international sanctions placed on its nuclear activities, Reuters reported yesterday (see GSN, Feb. 16).

The Security Council committee that monitors implementation of U.N. sanctions on the Stalinist state received the report at the end of January from the U.N. Panel of Experts on North Korea. Western diplomats said Beijing advised it would not allow the report to be forwarded to the broader Security Council for dissemination. The decision was perplexing to some as a Chinese expert was involved in drafting the report.

As one of five permanent Security Council members, China has veto authority over decisions made by the body. As the sanctions committee must have total agreement on all actions, Beijing can also block the Read more…

February 19, 2011 Comments off

Renewed civil unrest inspired by the recent uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt is being reported in three other Middle Eastern countries – Libya, Yemen and Jordan.

Libyan authorities have deployed troops in the second city of Benghazi following night time rallies over the killings of more than 20 protesters.

A major demonstration is taking place in the northern city of Tobruk and in Tripoli three people have reportedly been killed in an attempted jail break, according to security officials.

Libya has issued no casualty or injury figures after two days of protests.

Anti-government protesters attend the weekly Friday prayers in the southern Yemeni city of Taiz

But Human Rights Watch, quoting sources in the country, said at least 24 people have been killed by Libyan security forces who are using live fire.

Libya exerts strict controls on media and communications, making independent verification of claims about the unrest difficult to obtain.

Foreign journalists have been forbidden from entering the country by Colonel Gaddafi who appears to be trying to shut the country off to the outside world.

Libya’s state news agency, JANA, has made no mention of any violence. However, it has reported that “popular rallies” have taken place in “various Libyan cities to express support for the leader”.

When the final hammer came down at the end of the December auction at Holt’s Auctioneers — which specializes in the sale of classic English shotguns — total sales had hit a record $2.72 million. Among the hot sellers: a pair of Purdey shotguns had sold for $131,200, while two guns made by Holland & Holland went for $128,000. “Those are impressive and reassuring figures,” says Roland Elworthy, a valuer at Holt’s. Meanwhile Sotheby’s, whose sporting-guns sales are handled by Gavin Gardiner Limited, also enjoyed a healthy December auction — one buyer paid $134,400 for a single Boss & Co. 12-gauge shotgun. “Demand is as strong as I’ve ever seen it,” enthuses Gardiner, who has been auctioning classic firearms for 25 years.

The market for English shotguns is as hot as the Read more…

Gold rose to a one-month high as rising consumer prices boosted investor demand for an inflation hedge. Silver touched a 30-year high.

The cost of living in the U.S. climbed in January for a seventh month, the government said today. The U.K. consumer- price index rose to a 26-month high last month, a report this week showed. The precious metal has fallen 2.6 percent this year after rallying 30 percent in 2010 and touching a record in December.

“Gold is ready to resume its uptrend because of the worsening outlook for inflation,” said James Turk, founder of GoldMoney.com, which held $1.4 billion of precious metals and currencies for investors at the end of January.

Gold futures for April delivery climbed $10, or 0.7 percent, to $1,375.10 an ounce at 1:42 p.m. on the Comex in New York. Earlier, the price touched $1,385.40, the highest since Read more…

Global systemic crisis / World geopolitical breakup – End of 2011: Fall of the “Petro-dollar wall”

February 18, 2011 Comments off

– Public announcement GEAB N°52 (February 16, 2011) –

GEAB N°52 is available! Global systemic crisis / World geopolitical breakup – End of 2011: Fall of the “Petro-dollar wall” and a major monetary-oil shock for the United States

With this issue our team is celebrating two important anniversaries in anticipation terms. Exactly five years ago, in February 2006, the GEAB N°2 suddenly encountered worldwide success by announcing the next “Triggering of a major global crisis” characterized especially by “The end of the West as we have known it since 1945”. And exactly two years ago, in February 2009, in the GEAB N°32, LEAP/E2020 anticipated the start of global geopolitical dislocation phase by the end of that same year. In both cases, it is important to note that the undeniable interest aroused by these anticipations at international level, measurable particularly by millions of people reading the related public announcements, has been matched only by mainstream media silence over these same analyses and the fierce opposition (on the internet) of the vast majority of economic, financial or geopolitical experts and Read more…

US price increases hit consumers

February 18, 2011 Comments off
WASHINGTON – US energy and grocery prices are on the rise, hitting already struggling consumers and posing a tricky dilemma for US policy makers.

Confirming what most US shoppers already suspected, the Labor Department on Thursday reported prices for everything from vegetables to unleaded fuel rose again in January.

The Labor Department’s consumer price index rose 0.4 percent for the month, a rate that was slightly higher than economists expected and which confirmed large price increases for commonly bought goods in the last year.

The figures showed gasoline prices have leaped over 13 percent in the last 12 months, while grocery prices rose slowly but Read more…
