As more evidence mounts that the world is slipping faster into the next Ice Age, Washington insiders are scurrying to solidify their new power base for centralized government operations. Fears that the US capital might be struck by another more deadly terrorist attack—or other disasters—prompted federal agencies more than a decade ago to hurriedly establish back-up operations in case catastrophe struck. Despite the fact that many conspiracy theories are weaved around the subjects that follow—including some fairly wild-eyed, tin foil hat scenarios—most conspiracy theories have a basis in fact, albeit the facts are often distorted or wildly exaggerated. Snow tapered off in the Denver area Saturday morning and gave way to sunshine, leaving mounds of powder drooping from rooftops in the Stapleton neighborhood.

More than two centuries of Denver snowfall records were broken as more than a foot of snow clobbered the metro area in just three days.

Sunshine broke through Saturday afternoon as the storm, which began Thursday, moved east, said Jim Kalina, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Boulder.

The previous record for heaviest snowfall in 24 hours in February was 9½ inches, set on Feb. 22, 1909, Kalina said. Friday’s total snowfall of 12½ inches broke the 103-year-old record by 3 inches.

The fire has already blackened about 1,200 acres west of Golden, in Jefferson County, and officials said it was 15 percent contained Tuesday.

A light dusting of snow fell on the tops of the hills overnight, but the weather has been mostly working against firefighters in the steep, rugged terrain about 15 miles from downtown Denver.

More strong winds are in the forecast, with gusts as high as 75 mph expected later in the Read more…

WASHINGTON (AP) — Public health officials are warning travelers and workers present at four U.S. airports on two recent days that they may have been exposed to measles from a traveler arriving from London.

Authorities said Saturday that a New Mexico woman later confirmed to have measles arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport late in the afternoon of Feb. 20. Two days later, the measles-infected traveler departed from BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport near Baltimore on an evening flight to Denver, Colo., and then on to Albuquerque, N.M.

The traveler became sick and was subsequently diagnosed with measles in New Mexico, said Tom Skinner, a spokesman for the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He said Saturday night that authorities in those states are trying to notify Read more…
