According to recent Chinese statistics published in the 2010 China’s Ocean Development Report, ocean commerce in 2008 alone represented 9.87 percent of China’s gross domestic product, with a valuation of nearly 3 trillion RMB (approximately $456 billion). World Population to Hit Seven Billion by October

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 7, 2011 (IPS) – The United Nations commemorates World Population Day next week against the backdrop of an upcoming landmark event: global population hitting the seven billion mark by late October this year.

According to current projections, and with some of the world’s poorest nations doubling their populations in the next decade, the second milestone will be in 2025: an eight billion population over the next 14 years.

Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, executive director of the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA), told IPS seven billion represents a challenge, an opportunity and a call to action.

Britain in list of countries ‘most at risk’ if an asteroid strikes

Britain has been identified among a host of countries scientists believe would be worst affected in the event of an asteroid strike.

Experts at Southampton University have drawn up a league table of countries most likely to suffer severe loss of life or catastrophic damage should a large asteroid hit Earth.

The list is largely made up of developed nations including China, Japan, the United States and Italy, on the basis that the size of their populations would mean millions of deaths.

The US, China, Indonesia, India and Japan are most in danger on this basis. Canada, the US, China, Japan and Sweden are rated most at risk in terms of potential damage to their infrastructure.

Indonesia was hit by a large earthquake and a series of strong tremors Sunday afternoon. A 6.5 magnitude quake, the latest in string of strong quakes to hit the Pacific Ring if Fire region during the last week, struck the country’s easternmost Province of Papua 1.16 p.m. GMT.

The quake was centred 53 kilometres (33 miles) northeast of Waren, a town on the northern coast of Papua island, according to Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.  It was also felt in nearby Biak island, and Enarotali town on the main island The U.S. Geological Survey put the initial quake’s magnitude at 6.4.

The region was hit by at least moderate tremors in the following hours. The tremors measured 5.4 (x2), 5, 4.5 and 4.3 on the Richter Scale. There were no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

June 20, 2011 – INDONESIA – An unusual natural phenomenon is causing concern for communities living around the edge of Bali’s Lake Batur at Kintamani. On Sunday, June 19, 2011, the waters of the lake that sits in a volcanioc crater suddenly changed colors to a whitish-blue shade followed by the sudden death of thousands of fish (tilapia) living in the lake.

According to NusaBali, villagers for the lakeside community of Lintang Danu recount that the lake suddenly changed color on Sunday (June 19) morning in the areas surrounding the villages of Songan. Batur, Kedisan and Buahan. Shortly after the color change, thousands of freshwater fish floated to the surface and begin washing up on the lake’s shore. 2011 is on target to record the largest number of earthquakes in a single year for at least 12 years.

Research by Irish Weather Online, using data from the US Geological Survey (USGS), has found that earthquake activity (5.0-9.9 magnitude) from 01 January to 19 June 2011 is already exceeding the total annual seismic activity for the years 2001, 2002 and 2003.  2011’s total number of recorded earthquakes is also expected to exceed the most seismically active year of the past 12 years, 2007.

A total of 1,445 earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 5.0 to 9.9, have been recorded in the year up to 19 June. The total number of earthquakes recorded globally for the entire of 2007 was 2,270.

Volcano expert fears we’ll see a super eruption

Volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer yesterday warned there was a one-in-500 chance of the world being hit by a super- volcano this century.

The reader in vulcanology at Cambridge University told a Hay audience: “That might not sound like much, but it is a lot more likely than an asteroid impact.

“The events in Japan remind us that you can have a tsunami and earthquake and a nuclear plant there as well and you can have these chain reaction events that are actually quite calamitous and they are not unimaginable.”

Strain from Japan earthquake may lead to more seismic trouble, scientists say

Japan won’t stop shaking. One month after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the nation rode out yet another powerful aftershock Monday, the second in four days. This one rattled buildings in Tokyo and briefly cut power to the damaged nuclear plant in Fukushima.

 

With soldiers still looking for the bodies of thousands of people who vanished in the killer wave a month ago, Japan is coping with the painful reality that it sits in a seismic bull’s-eye.

A new calculation by American and Japanese scientists has concluded that the March 11 event may have heightened the stress on faults bracketing the ruptured segment of the Japan Trench.

Tsunami alert after Indonesia quake

A tsunami warning has been issued after a 6.7 magnitude quake struck off the Indonesian island of Java.

 

Indonesian seismologists issued a tsunami warning early Monday after an earthquake which they said had a magnitude of 7.1 struck in the Indian Ocean south of the island of Java.

Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said that the quake was 10km deep with its epicentre 293km southwest of Cilacap in central Java.

The quake had the potential to cause a tsunami, it said, asking recipients of its public alert SMS to warn other people of the danger.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said that there was no risk of a widespread destructive wave, but there was a ‘very small possibility of a local tsunami’.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was 6.7, and it was located 277km south of Tasikmalaya in West Java and 241km east-north-east of Christmas Island.

There is no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories.
