A United Nations forecast of the possible movement of the radioactive plume coming from crippled Japanese reactors shows it churning across the Pacific, and touching the Aleutian Islands on Thursday before hitting Southern California late Friday.

The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization shows how weather patterns this week might disperse radiation from a continuous source in Fukushima, Japan. The forecast does not show actual levels of radiation, but it does allow the organization to estimate when different monitoring stations, marked with small dots, might be able to detect extremely low levels of radiation. A data map of radiation levels in Japan posted on the TargetMap website has omitted information from the Fukushima Prefecture where nuclear reactors are currently melting down.

The map reports a “survey” of the area is currently “underway,” in other words the Japanese government is not reporting the obvious fact the area is contaminated with deadly radiation and it does not want the Japanese people or anybody else to know the full story.

A coordinated coverup of the severity of the situation is underway. This sort of behavior is typical of governments, especially when they are interested in protecting their power base and protecting the interests of transnational corporations.

Normally stoic Japanese citizens are outraged over the lack of information forthcoming from the Read more…

RELATED: Panic Buying: Stocks Of Potassium Iodide Exhausted In U.S.

U.S. health authorities could be blocking Americans from obtaining the radiation-fighting drug potassium iodide, even as the threat of a radioactive cloud from the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant affecting the United States prompts panic buying, which has led to stocks of the drug running out across the country.

As UN debates Libya, Kadhafi vows to crush rebels

(AFP)

TRIPOLI — Libyan strongman Moamer Kadhafi said he was determined to crush the month-old uprising against him, while at the UN, proposals for a no-fly zone to ground his warplanes met stiff resistance.

And as Kadhafi’s army announced it would soon move against the rebel bastion of Benghazi, anti-aircraft batteries and heavy artillery opened up in the rebel stronghold.

“If this is a foreign plot, we will crush it; if it is a domestic plot, we will crush it,” said Kadhafi, who has repeatedly blamed Al-Qaeda and Western powers for the revolt against his four decades of rule.

Late Tuesday, Kadhafi’s army said it would soon move on the opposition stronghold of Benghazi, 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) east of Tripoli, Libya’s second city.

A statement addressed to its residents said: “The armed forces are arriving to ensure your security, undo the injustice done to you, protect you, restore calm and bring life back to normal.

“This is a humanitarian operation being undertaken in your interests, and is not aimed at Read more…

U.S. Called Former Japan Nuclear Safety Official a ‘Disappointment’: WikiLeaks

Two years before a powerful earthquake rocked Japan and threatened catastrophe for its nuclear facilities, U.S. officials slammed the senior Japanese safety director of the International Atomic Energy Agency as “a disappointment” in part due to Japan’s nuclear safety practices, according to a leaked U.S. State Department document.

“[Tomihiro] Taniguchi has been a weak manager and advocate, particularly with respect to confronting Japan’s own safety practices, and he is a particular disappointment to the United States for his unloved-step-child treatment of the Office of Nuclear Security,” said the document, posted on the website for British newspaper The Guardian. “This position requires a good manager and leader who is technically qualified in both safety and security.”

Taniguchi was the executive director of Japan’s Nuclear Power Engineering Corporation, a company that specifically dealt with nuclear Read more…

Nasdaq is moving closer to a hostile bid for NYSE Euronext, which could come as early as Tuesday, sources close to the matter told CNBC.

Nasdaq [NDAQ  26.37  -0.82  (-3.02%)   ] has nearly secured financing for the hostile bid [NYX  36.55  1.28  (+3.63%)   ], in an arrangement that could involve IntercontinentalExchange, also known as ICE [ICE  124.79  -1.28  (-1.02%)   ], which operates  a global futures exchange and over-the-counter (OTC) markets and derivatives clearing houses.

Questions remain on how financing would be structured, as well as what role ICE would play in the bid, as sources say that ICE will not use its stock in any deal. Instead, it appears ICE could commit to purchasing certain NYSE assets upon the closing of any deal.

Any Nasdaq bid would face significant obstacles, including the likelihood of strong antitrust scrutiny, as nearly every U.S.-listed stock sits on either the NYSE or Nasdaq exchanges.

Last month, Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext  announced they would merge to create the world’s largest exchange operator in a Read more…

Nuclear Disaster ‘Will Have Political Impact as Great as 9/11’

The nuclear disaster in Fukushima makes it hard to ignore the vulnurabilities of the technology. It could spell the end of nuclear power, German commentators argue on Monday. The government in Berlin may now cave in to mounting pressure to suspend its 12-year extension of reactor lifetimes, they say.

The nuclear accident at Japan’s Fukushima plant following Friday’s earthquake and tsunami has led to anxious questions in Germany about the safety of its own nuclear reactors and is putting the government under intense pressure to rethink its decision to extend plant lifetimes by an average of 12 years.

German media commentators across the political spectrum are saying the accident in a highly developed nation such as Japan is further evidence that nuclear power isn’t safe. One Read more…

The Rule of Gold after the Financial Collapse

In a secular world, the operative “Golden Rule” is “He Who Has the Gold Makes the Rules”. The condition of the global financial banking system is untenable. The aggregate amount of debt worldwide is anyone’s guess. The introduction of derivatives and counter claims pushes the chain of obligations into the unknown. All that is left is for central banks to create mountains of uninterrupted counterfeit money to roll over and delay the inevitable. The IMF chart of World Currency Reserve is a skyrocket line to oblivion. It does not reflect a healthy stockpile of treasure, but certainly manifests a new debt machine running to infinity. The Bullion Vault explains this reality in the following manner.

“Sure, the Fed can create money. But it can’t create Read more…
