Nasa’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) has captured the stunning images of solar flares from the Sun on 16 April.

The flares kicked up a massive amount of intense super-heated solar plasma in an explosion known as coronal mass ejection, or CME. The eruptions blasted off the east limb (left side) of the Sun.

The powerful solar flare occurred at 1:45 p.m. EDT (17:45 GMT) and registered a M1.7 class (medium-sized) on the scale scientists used to measure flare strength, said Nasa.

“A large coronal mass ejection blasts off over the eastern limb of the Sun. Great eruption happening on the Sun now,” Nasa scientists posted a message on twitter.

Coronal mass ejections are associated with solar flares and can also occur independently. Both the solar flares and coronal mass ejections occur as a result of Read more…

An RCMP officer holds Canada’s new $100 banknote, which is made from plastic polymer and is designed to last longer and thwart counterfeiters. (Fabiola Carletti/CBC) Sweden and several other countries are experimenting with cash-free transactions, a trend that is fuelling debate about the need for tangible currency.

Readers were quick to offer their two cents onFriday’s editorial about the idea, “The International movement for the end of cash” by CBC’s Brent Bambury.

The majority of commenters were resistant to the idea of a cashless society, citing everything from decreased privacy and higher-tech crime to corporate control and technological vulnerabilities.

  • “Without strict laws, too, a cashless society will be one in which you have no fiscal privacy. Far from being more secure, intangible assets that Read more…

(Reuters) – A powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Chile’s eastern port of Valparaiso early on Tuesday, shaking buildings as far away as the capital Santiago, but there were no reports of significant damage and the country’s main copper mines were unaffected.

One elderly man died as a result of a heart attack brought on by the quake, which struck 26 miles north-northeast of Valparaiso, and 69 miles northwest of the capital Santiago, but there were no other reports of injuries.

State emergency office ONEMI said a stretch of coastline was being evacuated as a precaution, but there was no tsunami alert.

The Ring Of Fire Is Roaring To Life And There Will Be Earthquakes Of Historic Importance On The West Coast Of The United States

April 13, 2012 1 comment

endoftheamericandream.com

Does it seem to you like there has been an unusual amount of seismic activity around the world lately?  Well, it isn’t just your imagination.  The Ring of Fire is roaring to life and that is really bad news for the west coast of the United States.  Approximately 90 percent of all earthquakes and approximately 75 percent of all volcanic eruptions occur along the Ring of Fire.  Considering the fact that the entire west coast of the United States lies along the Ring of Fire, we should be very concerned that the Ring of Fire is becoming more active.  On Wednesday, the most powerful strike-slip earthquake ever recorded happened along the Ring of Fire.  If that earthquake had happened in a major U.S. city along the west coast, the city would have been entirely destroyed.  Scientists tell us that there is nearly a 100% certainty that the “Big One” will hit California at some point.  In recent years we have seen Japan, Chile, Indonesia and New Zealand all get hit by historic earthquakes.  It is inevitable that there will be earthquakes of historic importance on the west coast of the United States as well.  So far we have been very fortunate, but that good fortune will not last indefinitely.

In a previous article, I showed that earthquakes are becoming more frequent around the globe.  In 2001, there were 137 earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater and in 2011 there were 205.  The charts and data that I presented in that previous article show a clear Read more…

Argentinian farmers suing Monsanto for ‘poisoning’

digitaljournal.com

Monsanto is once again in the news. This time they and other corporations are being sued for allegedly “knowingly poisoning farmers” in Argentina.

Farmers from Argentina allege agri-giant Monsanto, together with Philip Morris and other U.S. tobacco companies, asked them to use chemicals on their crops. Said chemicals have allegedly caused “devastating birth defects.” The farmers say the corporations were aware of the implications but have failed to sufficiently warn farmers. The corporations thus were driven “by a desire for unwarranted economic gain and profit,” farmers say. The suit was filed this week at New Castle County Court, Delaware and Monsanto, Philip Morris Cos, Philip Morris USA, Carolina Leaf Tobacco, Universal Corporation and others are said to have “wrongfully caused the parental and infant plaintiffs to be exposed to those chemicals and substances which they both knew, or should have known, would cause the infant offspring of the parental plaintiffs to be born with devastating birth defects.” In a 55-page complaint filed with the court, it is alleged chemicals caused conditions to develop, including: “cerebral palsy, epilepsy, spina bifida, congenital heart defects, Down syndrome, missing fingers and blindness.”
The plaintiffs in the action are growers from Read more…

Persecution is something that many people have claimed recently, yet in Mali, West Africa, Christian persecution has reached desperate levels.  According to ASSIST News Service, one Christian leader has been beheaded and others are being threatened with similar treatment as Islamic militants run amok in Mali, West Africa.  Christians have subsequently fled the town of Timbuktu in the north of the country where harsh Sharia Law has already been imposed.  There have also been reports of churches in Gao, 200 miles to the east, have been completely destroyed.  This news comes after a military coup in the country, which has cut off electricity supplies.

Local Christian Timothee (Tim) Yattara, who recently returned to his home country to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ has fled with his family to Bamako, the country’s main city roughly 400 miles south west with no money to support his family.

GENEVA: India has vaulted to the top of the list of Iran’s oil customers, overtaking China, in a first-quarter buying surge ahead of tighter sanctions against Tehran this summer, data published by a leading industry consultant showed.

Direct imports to India from Iran were 433,000 barrels per day in the first quarter, compared with 256,000 barrels per day to China, according to data compiled by Geneva’s Petrologistics and seen by Reuters via an industry source.

The Indian import figure was up by around 23 percent from the 351,0000 bpd imported over the same period of 2011 and significantly above its 2011 average of 326,000 bpd.

Iran, like many oil exporters, does not publish its own oil sales data on a timely basis. The Petrologistics figures, however, reinforce indications that India has stepped up imports, while business has slowed between Tehran and Beijing over payment terms.

“The first quarter was likely the exception to the rule … China took a strong stance on negotiations, but its imports will Read more…

Eruptions of Magnetic Field Cause Sunquakes: Experts [VIDEO]

ibtimes

Scientists have discovered that sunquakes are caused by huge eruptions of magnetic field and charged particles in the solar system.

A study led by UCL’s Mullard Space Science Laboratory has shown for the first time that sunquakes, which are powerful earthquakes caused on the sun’s atmosphere can be produced during eruptions of magnetic field and charged particles, as the immense magnetic structure blasts off into the solar system.

According to royal astronomical society, the first observation of a sunquake was reported in the late 1990s. Researchers then believed that solar flares alone caused sunquakes. But now the new study has shown that eruptions of charged particles known as coronal mass ejections are also able to produce sunquakes.

The authors studied an eruption that took place on 15 February 2011 and found that sunquakes that were triggered by magnetic field were 1,000 times more powerful than the Great East Japan Earthquake that struck in March 2011.

It was found that the sunquakes were triggered at the two ends of the erupting rope of Read more…

UAE Signs Deal to Integrate National IDs Into Mobile Phones

April 13, 2012 Comments off

eff.org

The United Arab Emirates signed a deal with telecommunications company, Etisalat, to embed citizens’ national ID information into mobile phones. They will now be exploring a system that would utilize an NFC or Near Field Communication application, which allows cell phones to communicate data via radio frequency within very close range. The UAE has had a national ID system since 2004, with IDs carrying a chip similar to one on a credit card and holding a person’s name, birthday, gender, photograph, fingerprint, and ID number.

Etisalat, based in the UAE, has had a history working with the Emirati government on various initiatives. Notably, the company helped the government develop surveillance malware to be installed on Blackberry devices. However, it was quickly revealed that the “network upgrade” in disguise was in fact meant to spy on Read more…
