US intervention in Iran will drag China & Russia into war
Iran is accusing the EU of waging an economic war. It’s in response to Europe considering banning Iranian oil imports in the coming weeks. There’s already a verbal standoff over sanctions imposed by the U.S. at the end of last year, aimed at pressing Iran into abandoning its nuclear programme. Tehran threatened to block a key maritime trade route in the Persian Gulf, and later backed off, but is still warning U.S. ships against sailing in the area. Iran will reportedly hold another naval drill next month. But anti-war activist John Rees sees Western worries over Iran’s supposed nuclear ambitions, as an excuse to curtail Iranian influence in the region.
Iran, Russia keen on expansion of ties
Tehran, Jan 5, IRNA – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in a telephone conversation on Thursday discussed the latest international and regional developments, as well as ways for consolidation of bilateral ties.
The two sides emphasized on the close cooperation between Tehran and Moscow for resolving the regional issues.
President Ahmadinejad and President Medvedev also emphasized on expansion of bilateral economic ties and trade transactions.
They said that trade transaction between two countries should be done by using the national currencies of both countries and eliminating the dollar from the transactions.

Alaska Earthquake, No Tsunami Expected
A 6.1 earthquake was reported in the Aleutian Islands near Alaska. The quake was reported at 8:10 a.m. HST (9:10 a.m. near the epicenter) on Wednesday, September 14, 2011.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 1 km, according to the USGS.
Location to nearby cities is as follows: 21 miles NNW of Attu Station, Alaska; 596 miles E of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Russia; and 2009 miles NE of Tokyo, Japan.
The NOAA West Coast & Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement this morning saying the magnitude is such that a tsunami IS NOT EXPECTED. However, in coastal areas of intense shaking, locally generated tsunamis can be triggered by underwater landslides.
Russia, North Korea to Hold Joint Naval Exercises
A Russian military spokesman says Russia and North Korea are to hold unprecedented joint naval exercises in 2012.
Lieutenant Colonel Igor Muginov told Russian media Tuesday that the bilateral maneuvers will take place next year and will focus on search and rescue operations.
The agreement was reached last month during a visit by North Korean leader Kim Jong Il with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Muginov did not give any further details on the drills.

U.S., Romania Sign Interceptor Missile Deal
September 13, 2011Russia has agreed to cooperate on the initiative but disagrees over its implementation, saying it should be a single integrated shield rather than two separate defense systems.
Turkey said recently it had reached agreement on the deployment of a radar on its territory as part of NATO’s missile-defense system.

Russia Tests Aging Missile with New Warhead
MOSCOW – Russia on Saturday successfully tested its Topol strategic missile with a new warhead designed to breach missile shields, Russian news agencies reported, citing the defense ministry.
“The experimental warhead of the missile hit the designated target with high precision at the testing site on Kamchatka peninsula,” a spokesman for the strategic rocket forces told the Interfax news agency.
The Topol intercontinental missile used has been operational for 23 years and was being tested to check its durability in extended use, the spokesman said. The missile was fired from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in the northwestern Arkhangelsk region to its target area around 3,730 miles to the east.
