Chile Earthquake Today – Terremoto Felt in Santiago
CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – – Chile was struck by a 6.4 earthquake today. Chile’s earthquake or terremoto was felt in Santiago and struck during the morning rush hour. Today’s temblor is the latest powerful earthquake to strike the country this year. No reports of damage or injury today have been given.
Today’s earthquake activity in Chile produced the highest quake in the region in recent weeks. In April, Chile experienced two major earthquakes with hours of each other. On April 2, a moderate 5.1 quake struck forty-one miles south of San Antonio, Valparaiso. That temblor was followed hours later by an earthquake registering a 5.9 magnitude, centered eighty-three miles east of Iquique in the Tarapaca region stuck.

115 quakes recorded at Taal volcano in 24 hours
MANILA, Philippines— (UPDATE) Taal Volcano was rocked by 115 earthquakes in the past 24 hours, the highest number of tremors recorded in the area since the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology placed the restive volcano under Alert Level 2 last April.
It was the highest number in a day, a jump from the average of 10 mild quakes daily since alert level 2 (increasing restiveness) was hoisted over Taal on April 9, said Jaime Sincioco, officer-in-charge of the Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division of Phivolcs, in a phone interview.
He said that in the series of the 115 volcanic quakes recorded up to 3 a.m. Monday, 12 were of intensity 1 to 4 and “were felt by the residents” on the volcano island.
The strongest quake, also since April 9, was felt at intensity 4 at around 1:05 a.m.

Experts: Mega-Quakes Can Create Pole Shifts
Mega-thrust earthquakes like the ones that recently struck Chile and the Fukushima region of Northern Japan, can cause the magnetic field to flip. If a quake is strong enough there is evidence it may even set off a geological pole shift tossing the Earth off its current axis and killing billions of people within a matter of minutes.

Hawaii‘s traditional birth story—that the volcanic islands were, and are, fueled by a hot-rock plume running directly to Earth’s scorching core—could be toast, a new study hints.

Scientists say they’ve found solid evidence of a giant mass of hot rock under the seafloor in the region. But it’s not a plume running straight from the core to the surface—and it’s hundreds of miles west of the nearest Hawaiian island.

Time to shift view of seismic risk – experts

Knowledge of seismic risk is badly skewed in favour of earthquakes that occur on plate boundaries, such as the March 11 temblor that hit northeast Japan, rather than those that strike deep inland, a pair of scientists said on Sunday.
In commentary appearing in the journal Nature Geoscience, Philip England of Oxford University and James Jackson of Cambridge University say that in seismic terms, the 9.0-magnitude Sendai quake was “a remarkable story of resilience.”
Good civic training and building construction meant that the death rate was “impressively low,” they said. Around 25,000 people died, or 0.4 percent of those exposed to the event, and most of these died from the tsunami that followed.
The March 11 event occurred on a plate boundary, where the jigsaw of plates that float on Earth’s crust jostle and grind and slide under each other.
England and Jackson say plate boundaries are relatively well-studied, but a far greater threat lurks in continental inland areas.
“Death rates in earthquakes within continental interiors have often exceeded five percent and can be as high as 30 percent,” they warn.

Doomsday fire: Millions of volcanoes are stirring beneath the world’s oceans
In 1993, marine geophysicists aboard the research vessel Melville discovered 1,133 previously unmapped underwater volcanoes off the coast of Easter Island. Though some of the newly discovered volcanoes rose as much as one-and-a-half miles above the seafloor, their summits still remained half a mile below the water’s surface- all this in a comparatively small area of only 55,000 square miles, about the size of New York State. The geophysicists had increased the known supply of underwater volcanoes by more than ten percent just in a matter of months. That was 1993. Today, scientists estimate that there are more than three million underwater volcanoes. That’s a three followed by six zeroes! In 2007, oceanographers Hillier and Watts surveyed 201,055 submarine volcanoes. “From this they concluded an astounding total of 3,477,403 submarine volcanoes must reasonably exist worldwide,” said this article by John O’Sullivan. Hillier and Watts “based this finding on the earlier and well-respected observations of Earth and Planetary Sciences specialist, Batiza (1982) who found that at least 4 per cent of seamounts are active volcanoes.” According to Batiza’s survey, the Pacific mid-plate alone contains an incredible 22,000 to 55,000 underwater volcanoes, with at least 2,000 of them considered active. This is going to be the most extraordinary communication so fasten your seatbelts; we are in for a rough ride.
