Collapsing Earth: Why Are Giant Sinkholes Swallowing Cars, Homes And People All Around The World?

August 14, 2013 1 comment

SinkholeHas the crust of the earth become more unstable?  All over the planet, giant sinkholes are forming.  Many of them are so massive and are opening up so suddenly that they are actually swallowing cars, homes and even people.  So why is this happening?  Is the earth’s crust collapsing?  Is it expanding?  Is something else to blame for this phenomenon?  It seems like there is a story about another giant sinkhole in the news almost every single day now, and scientists seem to be at a loss for an explanation.  Could human activity be responsible?  Yes, the number of sinkholes in the United States definitely seems to be increasing, but we are also seeing massive sinkholes occur all over the globe – often in very Read more…

Giant Sinkholes: Will Your House Be Swallowed Next?

March 9, 2013 1 comment

A devastating sinkhole occurred in Florida on February 28, 2013, raising questions and concerns about this incredible phenomenon. Around 20% of the U.S. lies in areas susceptible to sinkhole events, highlighting the need for research and to be informed about this hazard.

What is a Sinkhole?

Geologically, a sinkhole is a depression in the ground that has no natural external surface drainage. Basically this means that when it rains, all of the water stays inside the sinkhole and typically drains into the subsurface.

BAYOU CORNE — Scientists have noticed a recent increase in seismic activity near the 8.5-acre sinkhole at Bayou Corne, and worry that it might grow again, Assumption Parish officials say.

The increase was first noticed about two weeks ago, John Boudreaux, director of the Assumption Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, said.

Scientists noticed more than 80 such events on Friday, but activity dropped after the sinkhole “burped” crude oil, debris and Read more…

Car falls into sinkhole on Northwest Side

August 21, 2011 1 comment

At the corner of Elston and Foster in Chicago,Il

An SUV — and its driver — tumbled into a sinkhole and flipped upside down early Saturday on the Northwest Side.

The incident happened at about 5:30 a.m. at the intersection of Foster and Elston in Jefferson Park, officials said.

The driver was able to crawl out of the car and the sinkhole. He was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital, police said.

The hole was caused by a burst water pipe, city officials said.

“A water main broke and the water basically washed away the dirt that supports the street,” said city Department of Water Management spokesman Tom LaPorte. “We don’t know what caused the damage … but we’re working around the clock to fix it.”

The car, an Acura SUV, was removed from the hole, which is about 12 feet deep and 20 feet wide. The intersection will remain closed through Sunday.

A section of Highway 148 near Luskville, Ont., is now a canyon 18 metres deep, a victim of Friday’s heavy rains.

Remarkably, the family living next to the giant gap owns a construction company with expertise in exactly the type of work that will be needed to fix the road.

Not only does James Nugent, of R.H. Nugent Construction, have 35 years of experience in the field, he has the heavy machinery parked only a few hundred meters from the caved-in road.

“We were called in right off the bat,” he said. “There’s nothing signed, but we probably will be proceeding with the work under an emergency situation. They want a company that can start right away.”

Nugent said the large pipe that ran under that stretch of the highway seems to have been blocked at the intake. The torrents of water late last week Read more…

“This has the potential to take the tip of Inskip Point with it – this is huge and on a scale I’ve never seen before,’’ he said.

“People are bringing chairs and sitting back to watch it in awe.

“This is absolutely amazing – it’s almost at the Read more…
